UNIOSUN becomes most expensive public varsity in South West, as management hike tuition by 140%

The management of Osun state university (UniOsun), Osogbo is increasing tuition fees by as much as 140%, SPEARGISTS has learnt.

The vice chancellor of the university, Prof Olabode Popoola, it was gathered has formally informed parents with wards in the university of the development.

However since he made the disclosure, tension has been on the rise on the campus of the institution, even as many students seeking admission into the university are said to be already looking elsewhere as a result of what is been tagged "cut throat" new tuition regime the management is introducing.

Under the new tuition regime, fresh non science students that used to pay N150,500 will as from 2017/2018 academic session, pay N210,500, while those going for Sciences, Anatomy/Physiology will have to pay N245,500, a over 120% increment from the previous N110,500.

From the N135,500, paid last session, Nursing and Law students are to pay N285,500. Public Health students that used to pay N110,500, will, as from the beginning of 2017/2018 session pay N285, 500. Engineering students, from the N110,500 paid last session will be paying N250,500.

According to sources on the campus of the university, the new tuition régime was presented to the parents that attended Parent Forum Meeting, held on 20th October, 2017 at the main campus of the university.

The institution's VC, Prof Olabode Popoola explained that the tuition had to go up for the management to be able to run the university without hindrance.

Popoola added that the proposed increment would only be applicable to fresh students and will not in anyway affect the returning students.

Meanwhile, checks in universities across South West region, reveals that with the increase in tuition, UniOsun has emerged the most expensive public university in South West Nigeria.

For instance in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, fresh students, who are indigenes of the two owner-states pay uniform tuition of N65,000, while non indigenes pay N75,000.

In Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, apart from N50,000 Acceptance Fee, the highest tuition payable by fresh students, regardless the department is N38,000.

In Ondo State University of Medical Sciences, tuition payable by 'freshers' is N190,000 for indigenes of Ondo attending the institution. The tuition has however been raised to N245,000 as from next academic session.

The situation is not too different in Ekiti state University (EKSU), where the highest tuition payable by fresh students is N200, 000. Those in Education pay as little as N60, 000 in their first year.

In Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, the highest tuition for 'freshers' is N108,000, while in Lagos State University (LASU) the tuition for fresh students ranges from N90,000 to N200,000.
